Lady Luck rode with me all the way. I got ahead at the start, around 9 seconds after 5-6 laps. Then Lane started reeling me in about a second per lap. Coming out of the pitstop at halfway point I was still ahead maybe 4 seconds. Around 10 laps to go he was right at my tail, just waiting for me to make a mistake. If he had tried a pass and gotten through, I would have been left behind for sure. I was running less downforce and pulling away a bit at the straights but he would make it all up in the corners. We were side by side exiting the final turn and it became a drag race to the checkered flag. Lane was certainly faster overall, and the margin of victory was only 0.05 of a second. Still, a win is a win is a win, and I'll take it. Thank you, Racing Gods!

A few days since my last smoke and drink and the nightmares have returned full force. Been sleeping 10-14 hours a day but still I wake up fatigued and feeling lactic acid overload or something. Maybe I should detail my dream patterns and lucidity techniques here. Would it help anybody at all? Light switch test is always the best. Anyway, there are more reasons to intoxicate other than a good nights sleep. I do not need to tell you. Wonder what kind of personality I'll have after the summer break, let alone after the 90 days limit (for certainty) when I take that piss test. You know that who you are is largely based on your body chemistry.

And there's no summer break really, I just signed up for USF1's GT3 series. Gonna run a Gallardo if my entry gets approved. Customs skins are allowed, too, so I might paint up something. (Pictured: my FXX Barchetta version 1.5)

2011 FiHS Hungarian GP Race Report

Been able to score some points in the last couple of rounds, but this is more because some drivers have abandoned their campaign and only a dozen or so show up for the race now, rather than any improvement in my performance. On the contrary I've gotten worse, getting involved in numerous incidents, my string of zero incident races now a distant memory. Gotta try and detox and re-focus during the summer break.

Quacksalver punches in the entry code on the keypad and waits for the confirmation tone... a short beep, barely audible, is followed by a deep thud. Then the airlock slowly opens as escaping gases hiss and metal surfaces shriek as they grind against each other. "This is the core of the ship," he says with a flourish, but there is nothing beyond the doorway. Not an empty room, not darkness, but nothing.

Quacksalver asks, "Do you see?"

Corse GP's 'Pimp Your Ride' Competition

Yup, you're not seeing things, we're really holding a competition to mod your ride and win some cool prizes.

We're looking for the best modified or original ride in SL. There are a few simple rules to adhere to and some great prizes on offer. The winners will be picked at the next Hot Corse Nights cruise party in August, giving you a month to sort out your whip...

Here's a brief run through of the rules:

No Copybotted cars or components

Cars must be driveable, so a maximum of 31 prims, with multiprim attachments if needed

Cars must be realistically proportioned, sized etc.

There are no real limits for creativity other than your mind, so with a month and a myriad of bodyshells, rims, engines and other components out there to choose from, you should have no problems in creating some truly awesome cars.

If the recognition and respect of your peers when you proudly show them off at HCN02 isn't enough, we've also got some cool prizes too...

Not looking forward to another race at Silverstoned. Don't get me wrong, I know this track is a classic and the "Silicon Valley" of Formula One, but I never did enjoy any lap at the disused airfield. The new arena section has made the lap longer and added new twists, but to me it is just another tedious sequence of corners. Round and round in some bare flatland grassfield, I'll take Interlagos or Imola over this track any day.

One of my best endurance races ever was at Daytona Road Course for the opening event of the 2010 IMSA Camel GT Championship season by Historic Simracing Organization. For this series we used Redline GTP mod for NASCAR2003 and I ran the famed Mazda 787B. With plenty of practice, I was easily the fastest driver/car in Lights class and finished 11th overall out of 22 runners despite 8 disconnections. An excellent performance (if I do say so myself) that buoyed me on to 5 consecutive wins and 6 wins out of 8 races, and I was sitting pretty on top of the Lights Division Championship with a huge points gap. It would have been my first ever championship but unfortunately the series got cancelled.

European Grand Prix Results

I expected to be way off as usual, but with some drivers absent and a few others running into trouble early I found myself fighting for P9 before the first round of pit stops. I was able to squeeze almost 20 laps out of the Primes and was in a decent position when two "Scotts" (Brown and Sebastian) started to reel me in. The Ferrari got past before the swing bridge and I think a lap later the STR tried a move in the first corner and tapped me in the back. He spun as he went past me and as I turned in I hit him pretty bad. My car got real bent while the STR had to retire, but somehow I made it back to the pits. After a lengthy stop I was able to go out again but the balance was gone and I was losing the rear under heavy braking. I spun it several times and had to baby the car around the corners. Finally the brakes gave up and I had to retire. A shame really, as I think I could have finished 10th or better and scored points.

A week to go until the European Grand Prix at the big street circuit in the port of Valencia and I've only done a few recon laps. I should be practicing harder, but it is difficult to get motivated when one expects to be around 4-6 seconds slower per lap compared to the fast guys. Also, I'm feeling tired and sleepy from this latest detox attempt and all the little aches and pains that have recurred aren't helping any. Maybe I should just smoke up and drink up and feel numb like I used to... it won't help my lap times but at least I'll be enjoying the drive.

Valencia is a relatively new track, having been added to the F1 calendar only in 2008, but already I keep some significant memories from racing here. This is where I collided with "the Wizard" Steven Matthies in a bizarre blue flag incident while he was leading the race. It cost him the victory and severely compromised his championship bid that year. Believe it or not, I also won a race here (what?!) back when I was running with the Sofa King Racing League. Seems so unreal now but I guess it really did happen.

This has gotta be a new low. Couldn't even stay awake waiting for the cable guy. I hope he comes back tomorrow or something. Maybe I should just figure out how to strip a coaxial cable properly myself. I don't remember having ever missed an appointment. This sort of thing just doesn't happen to me. My personal deterioration continues.

Maybe it is the detox attempt that has put me off. I feel constantly tired and sleepy and all the old injuries and aches and pains are acting up again. My body is all stiff and I have to shuffle around like some old man. Doesn't help that I've turned into a cyberchondriac. No use seeing a real doctor as I don't have any money for treatment anyway.

My time and chance has passed and there really is nothing more I can do in this world or with this life. I've squandered all my opportunities and now it is just so difficult to get motivated about anything. Why should I clean up my act and try to be a better person? So I can afford a decent burial.

In between the world of physics and chemistry, and the realm of perception and memory, lies an eternal abyss known as cognitive dissonance. Imagination builds a bridge made of delusion and voila! The puzzle is solved, the lesson is learned, the secret is revealed. The creature wakes up and has become another slave to the dream.

What happened to the race reviews? I am tired of writing about and taking pictures of my being a backmarker. I must admit, sometimes I ask myself why I even bother. A-last-er, always last, a loser every week... it's not like I'm going to die if I retire. But when you have no self-esteem, well there's nothing to lose and therefore no reason to give up. Some bizarro motivation this must be, driven by bent logic and cold emotion. I don't recommend this state of mind.

There are a number of explanations for my lack of pace; no talent or skills, no guidance or supervision, no discipline or focus... let alone all the binge drinking and drug abuse. But I'm not sure if solving any of these problems will result in a gain of speed. And I don't think that winning races will restore my lost confidence. I realize that what I am doing, it is not about the competition and proving I'm quick, not about pushing the envelop and exploring the limits, not about working with others and being part of something bigger than me. No, it can't be about those things anymore.

(Configuring your delusion to induce frequent fight-or-flight state will lead to prolonged health and youth. So prepare for post traumatic stress disorder and the collective contempt from the burgeoning zombie apocalypse.)

Somewhere in the past my indoctrination failed, I lost my place in society, and descended into subhumanity. Somewhere in the future they will find my mummified remains still seated in the cockpit, ham fists still gripping the steering wheel, lead feet still pressing on the pedals. 2011 FiHS F1 World Championship
May 6 - Round 5 : Turkey

With only two hours of sleep after yet another drinking binge (at Carlo Genilo's birthday party), I was totally hungover for this one. A quick shower and a big mug of coffee helped a bit, but I was not able to run some warmup laps during the practice session before the race. I wasn't even able to put in a qualifying lap and started in my customary last place. Somehow I couldn't run the big Turn 8 flat-out like I should have, but I brought it home without a scratch and that's five consecutive rounds with zero incident for me.

J Kim in the Red Bull started in Pole Position and put in a strong drive to finish 4th.

StevenM, subbing for JoshJ in the Red Bull, got tangled up in the first corner with a certain incident prone Lotus and again with MarkG of McLaren. He recovered and finished in 2nd place by managing his tire wear and being patient while slicing through the field.

RacerScott uncharacteristically missed a braking point and narrowly avoided taking out both Ricardo Gonzalez in the Mclaren and J Kim in the Red Bull. There was no epic RS vs RG duel this time and the current champion finished 3rd.

A wild and wacky race for MarkG of Mclaren, accused of ignoring blue flags while being lapped by Dave Carney in the Virgin, and unnecessary blocking while in a fight for position with Tom101 in the Renault. I think he blew out his right front tire after missing his pitstop, and eventually got disqualified in post-race scrutineering for not submitting his tire log file.

Sebastian Scott in the Toro Rosso and Tim202 in the Renault were in a tight battle that lasted several laps, with Tim finally taking the position with a bold maneuver round the outside of a turn. Both drivers finished in the points.

Sean Higgins was running well in the Mercedes until pitstop problems compromised his race and he ended up in 14th.

Dave Carney drove superbly and finished 5th in the Virgin but sparked a brief debate after declaring the Pirelli tires were crap. I already said my piece about the tire wear issue during pre-season testing.

Newcomer Cauchy brought the Force India home in his debut race at FiHS. Good job, man.

"This was a great race for me," said Ricardo Gonzalez who won the 2011 FiHS Turkey GP in dominant fashion. J Kim tried to stay with him during the opening laps but he was clearly the fastest through Turn 8 and was never threatened.

Failure to qualify at the Shell V-Power event still lingers in my mind. I guess I am just not elite. Been doing this sim racing thing for almost half my life and I've never been a top driver; always anywhere from 2 to 6 seconds slower per lap compared to a fast guy or an alien. There must be something I don't understand, something I didn't learn, for I've always done this racing thing without supervision or guidance. And nowadays I am just too intoxicated and differently motivated.

Whatever happened to my confidence, my courage? Years of drug abuse and the demise of my band must have had something to do with it. But it was destroyed when I became infatuated with this pretty girl and I wanted so much to ask her out but I was afraid to ruin the memories of her teenage years. I had to be certain that I would have a positive effect in her life before I did anything. So I took a long look in the mirror, and I found nothing of value. It felt like there was this abyss between me and her, and I would have fallen into it and completely lost myself if I didn't sacrifice my self-belief.

No way am I blaming her for my racing troubles. I didn't even meet her really, let alone chat with her or any of that. I never saw her eyes and I hardly saw her face and it's hard to imagine all of it now. I just can't help but think that, if only I could see her again, or sit behind her somewhere for an hour or so like I did many years ago in Theology class... if I knew she was doing alright, maybe then it wouldn't matter so much that I'm just a backmarker and a grid filler. Maybe I'll win (saved by zero).

A forgettable race for me in China. Less than a hundred laps of practice and I was expectedly way off the pace and made plenty of mistakes. At least I was able to keep my zero incident record, five straight races now I think.

Polesitter JoshJ leads the pack into the Turn 1. Good job in qualifying for the STRs as both drivers JeffO and Seb Scott make it into Q2.

Ricardo "Speedy" Gonzalez in the McLaren takes the lead from Josh in the Red Bull at the hairpin. StevenM in the other Red Bull (subbing for J Kim) and RacerScott in the Ferrari are not far behind.

Sebastian Scott runs ahead off the trailing pack in his Toro Rosso. Bad luck would strike him yet again, this time in the form of a black screen of death.

Some incidents involving Mat Harto of Team Lotus, championship points leader over at USF1 league. Maybe it is his aggressive style and divided attention between two series that is making him a crash magnet.

Stuff in the Williams gets out of shape and gets in the middle of another epic RS vs RG battle.

Key point in the race: the wizard StevenM comes out of the pits ahead of the furious battle between RicardoG and RacerScott.

The dark horse is a Red Bull ... Steven Matthies, aka Merlin takes the win in China.

DEAD AIR

Plenty of practice for the first two rounds got me only 11th and 14th. So of course I asked myself why bother for this third round in Malaysia... why prepare for any race at all when my max effort can't even get any points? Looks like its back to the party hardy for me. I got no hope at all against a grid this fast. The result; only 16th after starting 14th against 18 runners. Way off the pace and one of the few times I finished lower than my start position, but at least I didn't hit anything.

Ricardo "Speedy" Gonzalez jumps the start. I had a bad start myself; it was hard to see the lights from way back and I was waiting for an audible signal that never came. Nak spun behind me trying to get around my slow start.

Some incidents at Turn 1 and lap 1, something a rear gunner like me usually avoids.

I reverted to 2010 HRT livery. With my pace, I look like I am driving last year's slowest car anyway.

Sebastian Scott in the Toro Rosso suffers an engine failure whilst in the pits. Pete (the championship points leader) in the Force India overcame a long pit stop after lap 1, chased the whole race and overtook me near the end, and finished ahead of me.

A brief battle with JeffO in the early goings makes me eat my tires. I was able to complete a 2 stop race simulation during practice sessions, but fighting for position against a faster driver compromised my plans.

"Kinda a lonely race for me," says RacerScott, winner of FiHS GP of Malaysia. Will it be a hat trick in China?

Next up Shanghai, a race track I care for even less than Sepang. Tilke-dromes with their smorgasbord of corners are like tall drinks mixed with all sorts of liquor... no more taste really, just the alcohol. A Tilke designed track usually means a long lap filled with different kinds of technical corners that seem to focus more on testing car capabilities rather than driver skill and confidence. I dunno, some drivers like the track I think. Sure, I like a long straight (some time to think and check the car and stuff) but for some reason Shanghai is probably the most boring long straight there ever was.

With my enthusiasm for testing lost and another uninspiring track coming up, plus the fact that it is only a 1 week break between rounds 3 and 4, the prognosis for China is not good.

RacerScott prevails in an epic battle with Ricardo "Speedy" Gonzalez to win the 2011 FiHS Australian GP.

But what caused the Safety Car to come out? There were no incidents at the time of its deployment.

Ricardo "Speedy" Gonzalez started the race from pole position after a scintillating qualifying lap.

MarkG was an early DNF after tangling with a Lotus and getting hit by a Renault.

FULL RACE REPORT

A little controversy before the race as late entry Eleanor and the "Super-Subs" StevenM and Pete haggle for the remaining open seats. There are two absent drivers (MarkG and Brandon Gant) so the issue is settled with StevenM switching to the vacant Mclaren and Eleanor and Pete running the Force India cars. With JeffO getting disconnected just before race start, 22 drivers line-up for Round 1 of 2011 FiHS F1 World Championship in Sakhir, Bahrain.

Pete wins the season opener and it is also his second career win at FiHS. StevenM has gotta be the driver of the race with 20 places gained, starting 22nd and last and finishing 2nd. Bad luck for defending champion RacerScott as he got disconnected on lap 3. Plenty of fighting for the final points positions with J Kim securing third place.

Not a bad race for me I suppose; started 21st and finished 11th just outside the points. Some shaky laps when the car was heavy with fuel and some mistakes while trying to defend position, but I brought it home without a scratch. There is some work to do next round in Melbourne, and not just the lack of speed, but the excessive front tire wear issue as well.

Watching the replay, a strange sequence at the start with Captain Slow; it looks like I was aiming for him or something as we funnel into Turn 1. During the race I didn't see any of this happening because of lag, I just braked when it suddenly warped, blindly held my line and somehow didn't hit anything as the connection re-stabilized exiting the hairpin. I know it was clean because I have no incidents in the race report.

2010 FiHS Formula 1 Driver's Championship Standings

2011 FiHS Formula 1 Championship Pre-Season Jitters

Pirelli test mod is out and Car/Team selection process will begin soon. Last year, as has been the practice for a long time, the order of selection was based on a Driver Valuation points system using the previous season's results. So the current Driver's Champion, RacerScott gets to be the first to pick his car and teammate. Runner-up Ricardo Gonzalez gets to choose next and so on. If the guy who is next on the list has already been chosen for a team, then his pick goes to the subsequent driver.

Over the weekend a new selection process has been proposed, where the drivers pool will be divided into two groups, (what I would call ) the Fast and the Furious. Each team must be comprised of 2 drivers, 1 from each group. This seeks to create more parity amongst teams and prevent the creation of superteams like last season's Mercedes with JoshJ and StevenM, and the Ferrari Boys RacerScott, Pete, and their super sub Ricardo Gonzalez.

I didn't do so well last season, so whatever the selection process will be, I don't think I will be able to select a car until a late round. My only concern really is if I will be able to run in the optional Minardi livery that JoshJ previewed last year. Maybe the paint scheme will be available whatever car I get to drive, and I can run under the Minardi name this season. Yes, I am a fan of the racing team from Faenza that designs and builds Formula One cars.

Captain Slow posted a quick tutorial on telemetry stuff and how to interpret all the info and unfortunately I am not motivated to understand it much. I could probably gain a second or two per lap if I took the time to figure out those pesky little graphs. I don't think the daredevil gentlemen of motor racing past ever had to read through rows and rows of squiggly lines. Maybe I should try to team up with a driver who is Motec savvy (JeffO?). I sure could use some basic lap data like fuel consumption, apex speeds, top speed at the straight...

I like to explore and I find sim crossing exciting. Consider the myriad of factors involved when driving a max prim, script heavy, fully featured vehicle through the lag warp ...the speeds achieved during transit are insane! And then you end up right back where you started, yet in another region.

Avoid sim corners and cross region borders perpendicularly. If you get caught on a ban line, or trapped by an object, use Edit to shift your vehicle's position to a place where you can safely restart. If you get lost in the lag warp, try to teleport to your Home position and you might recover without having to restart your viewer.

Several hours before green flag and I connect for Round 5 of the USF1 League LMS Championship in Road Atlanta. Dave Carney, the overall leader of the series, leaves the server just as I login; looks like he and Karsten have been running some laps in the LMP1 cars. I jump into my Porsche to do some reconnaissance.

I have raced here before using the Redline GTP mod for NR2003 so I am a little familiar with the track layout. There's plenty of excitement with some challenging curves, huge elevation changes, and a long back straight. However, this initial test version by Uzzi is missing some trackside objects and adboards and a bit boring visually. I feel like I am cruising around in some rural back road passing through some ghost town, instead of participating in an international motorsport event.

Anyway the 997 is great fun to drive and the engine sounds spectacular. With the wind blowing and the road rumble, it all comes together like some orchestral movie score. Approaching top speed in sixth gear and very near the rev limit, a high pitched whine like some trumpet crescendo comes to the fore, and the car itself announces its arrival into the sublime temporal territory of escape velocity.

Karsten, the points leader in GT2 division, re-enters the server with his own Porsche 997 and goes out for a short stint. I try to stay on his tail, but I fail. After a few more laps, the TOS in my right arm starts acting up again and I decide to pit in. Checking the time sheets, I find my best lap is more than 5 seconds slower than Karsten's. Time for a smoke break.

Some 20 minutes before qualifying, Karsten starts typing up some setup tips in the chatbox. I plug-in some of the values into my car, and on my first timed lap with the new configuration I run more than 2 seconds faster than my previous best. Still more than 2 seconds behind per lap though, and at this pace, with the race scheduled for 120 minutes, I'll be way behind by checkered flag.

It is now time. The SRA for the remainder of 2010 and into 2011, will host a Full LMS championship. The newly released Enduracers Mod will host all 10 rounds of the championship. Events will be held every two weeks, on Sunday. Starting Date for Race one is To be Determined. We have a date of August 22nd for Round 1, but this could be pushed back..Due to the release of Service Pack 1… Just As our Special Events, European drivers will have the opportunity to participate in this series as well. If you would like to use Custom Skins, please contact “B. Gant” here on forum for details. It will be the offseason directive for until the new USF1 league starts in 2011.

MY first ever restrictor plate race and there is a pounding jackhammer in my chest. Speeds approach 300kph throughout the entire lap around this colossal track, and a small error can turn into a big mistake in an instant. Fender to fender, side by side, with ten other cars on some perpetual superhighway, in a car that wants to turn left like a tapered plastic drinking cup rolling across the floor...

I must admit, I was one of those idiots who thought NASCAR and Stock Car Racing was a joke. I thought speed ovals were venues more fit for testing cars and their components and not for any sort of competition. It seemed like on such a simple layout the race would come down to who had the faster car, and driver skill and confidence wouldn't be a factor at all. Just turning left all the time, what kind of racing is that?

Imagine two Formula One cars racing on a road course full of twists and turns and chicanes. Lap after lap after lap they chase each other, nose to tail, neither driver making a mistake and both cars keeping the pace. They dive into a short straight, full throttle towards the end of the chute, where a hairpin presents an overtaking opportunity. Finally, the trailing car takes the chance; using the slipstream to gain speed it lunges inside of the turn in a daring attempt to outbrake the leading car into the apex.

Now imagine this overtaking event, muliplied or magnified or stretched or something. Instead of it being a one special moment in the race, the overtaking event becomes the whole race from start to finish. Instead of it happening on just a particular section of the track, the overtaking event happens along the total length of the track. And instead of just two drivers, make it ten, twenty, thirty drivers fighting for position.

This is how I have come to understand Stock Car Racing. I fell out of bed, hurting my head from the things I said. Yes, I get my fair share of humble pie every time I run NASCAR. But I try it out once in a while, when I feel brave. Someday, I will figure out all these many different ways to turn left. Help me, Tom Cruise!
